Nashville, Tenn. (September 2, 2016) — Chair Mary Mancini releases a statement on the call by Gov. Haslam for a special session.

“Tennessee Republicans would like you to believe this was an accident. It was not. This was the direct result of a failure of leadership by Speaker Beth Harwell. Let’s look at the facts that led to this result: she accelerated the pace of the legislative sessions, she put a cap on the number of bills lawmakers could introduce, and she failed to address the real concerns about the state’s fiscal review process.

As Speaker and as a leader, Beth Harwell has failed continuously. Instead of holding Jeremy Durham accountable, she swept his sexual harassment under the rug. Instead of leading and working to pass Governor Haslam’s Insure Tennessee plan, she said there was nothing she could do. This week, we learn that she’s not even competent enough to avoid losing out on $60 million in federal highway funds. Three strikes and she’s out. She simply is not an effective Speaker.”
