Senator Corker Must Honor His Promise Of An Independent Investigation Into Trump-Russia Collusion

Nashville, Tenn. (May 9, 2017) –

On April 18, Senator Corker told a room full of Tennesseans that if the chairmen of the Senate Intelligence Committee informed him that politics was getting in the way, or if he himself saw “anything” that he thought was slowing it down or getting in the way of  the investigation, he would support “another route.” This was in response to a demand for an independent investigation.

Following the firing of FBI Director James Comey, Senator Mark Warner, ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee has called for a special counsel. Senator Corker put out a statement today that does not include a call for an independent investigation. Senator Richard Burr, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, released a statement saying the firing of Comey “further confuses an already difficult investigation by the Committee.”

Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party, Mary Mancini said, “Senator Corker needs to stop putting his party before his country. He told Tennesseans that if he saw ‘anything’ that slowed down the investigation, he would support an alternative route, meaning an independent investigation. The man leading the investigation of President Trump was just fired by President Trump. Republican Senator Richard Burr, chairman of the committee, has already said the firing ‘further confuses’ the investigation. Democratic Senator Mark Warner has called for an independent counsel. This is a bipartisan issue because the national security of our country hangs in the balance. Senator Corker made a promise to Tennesseans less than a month ago and he has already gone back on it to protect his party and to protect President Trump.”
