Speaker Paul Ryan Wants to Cut Social Security and Medicare
Tennessee Republicans are eager to help him do it
Nashville, Tenn. (June 1, 2017) –
Republican Paul Ryan has been trying to undermine Social Security and Medicare for almost his entire career in Congress, most recently proposing cuts to Medicare and Social Security in his budget, and Tennessee Republicans are intent on helping him any way they can.
“Speaker Ryan’s most recent budget was given the thumbs up by every Tennessee Republican in Congress who has had the chance to vote for it and Trump ally Bob Corker is telling Americans they need to work longer before they retire,” said Mary Mancini, chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party, “Most Tennesseans are still living in the recession and Social Security and Medicare are more important than ever. It is unimaginable that Republicans continue to push for cuts to these programs that allow people who have been paying into the system and working hard their entire lives to retire with some dignity,” Mancini said.
Tennessee Senator Bob Corker has recently been talking about his own desire to raise the retirement age for Social Security. This is not a new initiative for Corker, who proposed changes to the programs with Senator Alexander in 2012.
Ryan will be in Knoxville, TN on June 1, for a fundraising reception put on by the Tennessee Republican Congressional Delegation. For $10,000, guests can get a photo with the Speaker of the House.
