Nashville, Tenn. (October 6, 2017) – Mary Mancini, chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party, released the following statement on the Trump Administration rollback of the federal requirement for employers to include birth control coverage in their health care plans:
“This is both a cynical and a callous action. Before the Affordable Care Act’s birth control provision went into effect, more than 1 in 5 women struggled to afford prescription birth control. Out-of-pocket costs for birth control can run hundreds of dollars a year. Because of the Affordable Care Act, 57 million American women have access to no-copay birth control, saving their families a total of $1.4 billion in the first year alone. The United States is at a 30-year low for unintended pregnancy and a historic low for teen pregnancy. Improvement can’t be made on these results unless women continue to have access to birth control. Politicians must stop interfering in women’s healthcare. Shame on the Trump administration.”
