Nashville, Tenn. (November 29, 2017) – Back in July, State Senator Brian Kelsey met with the controversial US Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos for an undisclosed purpose. At the time, Kelsey and his legislative assistant did not respond to repeated requests for information about the meeting.
“It is highly irregular for a state senator to get a private audience with the Secretary of Education. We know that DeVos’ organization has spent more than $1.5 million since 2012 advocating for vouchers that would further underfund our schools and that Sen. Kelsey has been a lead sponsor for a voucher plan that has been rejected on a bipartisan basis every time. We can only assume that Sen. Kelsey and Sec. DeVos met to strategize how to advance their unpopular plan. Senator Kelsey owes Tennesseans an explanation for the meeting.”
