Nashville, TN (December 7, 2017)  – The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is holding its national policy summit in Nashville. Governor Haslam will be addressing the conference on Thursday afternoon. Some may be surprised that the man tapped to lead the Republican Governors Association would appear in front of the very group that undermined his authority and stopped a major policy initiative, Insure TN, which would have expanded Medicaid.

The “Stop Obamacare Act,” introduced by Senator Brian Kelsey and disgraced former Representative Jeremy Durham in 2014, removed Haslam’s authority to expand Medicaid in Tennessee. The bill was modeled after ALEC’s “Requiring Legislative Authority for Medicaid Expansion Act.” The bill was pushed by Americans for Prosperity TN, an ALEC linked advocacy group. In 2015, the State Policy Network affiliate, Beacon Center TN, also linked to ALEC, successfully stopped Haslam’s effort again.

“It must be embarrassing for Gov. Haslam to be summoned to address the very people who undermined him. As Chair of the Republican Governors Association he has to grovel for donations in front of the same hacks who thwarted his Insure TN plan and stopped 280,000 Tennessee families from being able to see a doctor when they’re sick,” said Mary Mancini, Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party. ‘It seems like he is more interested in pleasing national donors than doing his job as Governor of Tennessee.
