Tennessee (January 15, 2018) – As Tennessee pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mary Mancini, The Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party released the following statement:
“As we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., let us remember, especially during this perilous time, his wise words: The time is always right to do what is right. If Dr. King were here today, he would be fighting every day for the right thing. He would be fighting for his dream, not fully realized, of a place in which every Tennessean, no matter who they are, what they look like, who they love, or where they come from, is treated with dignity and respect and has the opportunity for a better life for themselves and their family.
We must also remember his struggle to vanquish poverty, the specific legacy Dr. King left in Tennessee. Today, almost 50 years later, too many Tennessee families still struggle to keep a roof over their head and food on their table. In Memphis, where Dr. King’s life was ended during the Poor People’s Campaign, nearly 1 in 2 children live in poverty. This is unacceptable. On this day in which we celebrate a great man, let us recommit to continuing the work of Dr. King to end poverty, as well as racism, misogyny, and every other form of injustice and oppression that continues to exist in this imperfect country we all love so dearly.”
