Fleischmann’s contradictory statements show disregard for Dreamers
March 5, 2018 (CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.) — This weekend in Chattanooga, neighbors stood up for neighbors at a rally urging legislators to protect Dreamers. In response to the rally, Representative Chuck Fleischmann claimed he supported DACA in exchange for greater border security, but went on to say, “Keeping this one point in mind, DACA is only one small part of the entire immigration scenario, and what I would like to see is some sort of comprehensive fix to the entire immigration situation.”
This statement comes as a surprise to people who remember the Comprehensive Immigration Reform package that passed the U.S. Senate in 2013, supported by both Republican Senators Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander. Back then, Fleischmann said he preferred a ‘piecemeal approach‘ and along with his caucus, refused to even debate the comprehensive bill — even though it included a vast border security component introduced by his own constituent, Senator Bob Corker. So which is it?
In response to Rep. Fleischmann’s most recent statement on immigration, the Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party, Mary Mancini, released the following statement:
“Dreamers are Tennesseans, too — and our elected officials should have their backs. Rep. Fleischmann refused to even debate the comprehensive approach in 2013, and now he wants to use these young people’s futures as a bargaining chip. Tennesseans want leaders with integrity, who will put politics aside and work together to solve problems. Rep. Fleischmann must do his job and get something done to ensure every Tennesseean has an opportunity for a better future.”
