Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Chip Forrester released the following statement after Mitt Romney today said that “He says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

“Tennesseans know that firefighters, policemen, and teachers are the backbone of a successful community, yet Romney seems to think that we have too many of them and that firing them will be the solution to all of our economic problems.

“Our teachers, police and firefighters are hard-working folks who want to make their cities and towns a better place, and they want to make sure every American has a shot at the American Dream and the opportunity to live in a safe, prosperous community. Mitt Romney’s statement today just shows how detached he is from the reality of everyday American life. But this comes as no surprise, coming from a candidate who has joked about being unemployed himself, said he likes firing people, and claimed that corporations are people. Obviously, Romney doesn’t get it.

“Mitt Romney saying we don’t benefit from more firefighters, police officers, and teachers is further proof of his philosophy of Romney Economics: more budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy and fewer rules for Wall Street—the same formula that benefitted a few, but crashed our economy and punished the middle class. Middle class Tennesseans can’t afford Romney Economics: tax cuts for the wealthy over investments in our community is not the formula for a successful community. And Tennesseans know it.”
