The GOP Will Raise Your Taxes
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Democratic Party released the following statement today after tax experts confirmed the House Republican tax plan, supported by ALL Tennessee Republican members of Congress, would hike taxes on hardworking, middle-class Tennesseans and cut vital programs and services to pay for budget-busting tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires:
“Today’s analysis confirms what we’ve known all along: the Republican politicians in Congress are pushing a failed economic agenda that would give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans, paid for by much larger tax bills for middle-class families and deep cuts to Medicare, Social Security, roads, schools and other critical programs.
“We’ve already seen how this approach plays out: just look at Massachusetts under Mitt Romney. While Romney was governor, he gave tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires like himself but raised more than 1,000 taxes and fees on small businesses and the middle class. These fee hikes included everything from milk to nursing homes, from school bus rides to poultry inspections, and even fee increases for blind people and electricians. And let’s not forget — under Mitt Romney, Massachusetts ranked 47th out of 50 in job creation and lost manufacturing jobs at twice the national average.
“Now House Republicans are taking the same backwards principles of Romney Economics and are trying to force them on all hardworking Americans. But throwing the middle class under the bus to fund tax breaks for the richest Americans didn’t work in Massachusetts, and it won’t work now.”
