In an interview last week*, Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey said that he and the rest of the Republican leadership will push through a plan to divert tax dollars from public schools and give them to unaccountable private schools through a voucher system.
This is another in a long line of attacks from Ramsey and the rest of the Republicans on both the institution of public schools and the ability for local governments, in this case Shelby and Davidson Counties, to determine how they’ll run their schools and cities.
Instead of finding ways to truly improve our public schools, which are near the bottom of the list in the country, Ramsey and his friends are trying to find ways to insert their radical ideology into every aspect of the state.
Whether it’s taking the rights of teachers to speak with one voice to negotiate for better classrooms and more resources, or taking away the ability of cities to like Nashville and Memphis to promote non-discrimination, Ramsey has advanced an ideological agenda that punishes our cities, our teachers, and taxpayers in those cities.
Stand up to Ron Ramsey and his radical agenda. Send Ramsey a message that his legislature should focus on providing resources to improve our public schools, not giving taxpayer funds to unaccountable private schools.
