Position: Executive Director

Position Summary: The Executive Director is responsible for devising, implementing and managing the execution of the Tennessee Democratic Party, its overall election strategy and activities, and its plan for growth. This specifically includes, but is not limited to, election-based activities, fundraising, budgeting, recruiting and hiring talent, communications, outreach, and building State Party infrastructure. 

This position will require travel and is an in-person position based out of the TNDP’s Nashville, TN headquarters. Irregular hours including nights and weekends as well as increasing hours are an expectation of the job.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the daily operation of the Tennessee Democratic Party.
  • Communicates with candidates, elected officials, key donors and stakeholders, county chairs and grassroots organizations as a representative of the Democratic Party to set campaign/electoral priorities and plans.
  • Manages state party staff and works with directors to establish program priorities.
  • Directs communications and media; serves as a designated spokesperson in consultation with the Chair as needed.
  • Establishes and implements operational priorities and coordinates with finance staff, consultants, and participates in fundraising call time efforts along with the Party Chair, other party officers and elected officials.
  • Serves as liaison for elected officials and the State Democratic Party.
  • Serves as a principal strategic and tactical executive of the Tennessee Democratic Party.
  • Conducts weekly staff meetings and manages projects and events.
  • Collaborates with the Chair, Finance Director, compliance consultants and related staff to develop and adhere to an operating budget (along with monitoring weekly bill payment and filing of regular campaign finance reports). Approves and signs off on expenditures at the direction of the Chair.
  • Assists with oversight of the Fundraising Plan, makes direct fundraising asks of major donors, and develops new fundraising opportunities.
  • Ensures that the Personnel Committee is current on human resources and all employment policies.
  • Assists with the development and marketing of the long‐term strategic plan in consultation with other major Democratic stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with the Communications Director and Chair to issue press releases, address important issues, respond to opposition, and present the Democratic Party in a positive, professional light. Assists staff and consultants in developing and implementing a long-term communications plan incorporating earned media, paid media, and new media.
  • Issues regular stakeholder updates on activities of Chair and Staff to campaigns, stakeholders, and other political leaders.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of at least four (4) years direct campaign or advocacy organization experience. 
  • Executive experience working on a coordinated campaign, statewide or congressional political campaign, or with a state political party preferred.
  • Experience managing a large, diverse, and highly skilled team, with demonstrated ability to achieve high levels of performance and outcomes through management and influence.
  • A reputation for leading with integrity and making decisions with the input of the appropriate stakeholders.
  • Experience building, managing, and tracking large budgets.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage several tasks and projects at the same time.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail oriented and good follow through on tasks.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with staff and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time position. This position salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The position will include medical and vision insurance benefits.

Position: Finance Director

Position Summary: The Finance Director serves in a core role at the TNDP. The Finance Director will manage the Finance Department to raise the money that the TNDP needs to secure victory in upcoming elections and fight back against the GOP supermajority. The Finance Director will lead the Finance Department to building lasting donor relationships and networks, see continual growth, and secure long term financial stability. The Finance Director will think ahead to future election years and how to grow the TNDP.

 

This position will require occasional travel and is an in-person position based out of the TNDP’s Nashville, TN headquarters. Irregular hours including nights and weekends as well as increasing hours are an expectation of the job.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Developing strategic fundraising plan for TNDP

  • Overseeing donor research, expanding donor networks, and maintaining donor database

  • Travel in and out of state to fundraise for the TNDP

  • Working with Operations Director and consultants to ensure compliance with state campaign finance laws

  • Working with staff, consultants, and vendors on an ambitious fundraising strategy implementing an annual fundraising calendar, including direct mail, email, events, and other targeted fundraising campaigns

  • Developing and conducting fundraising training for staff, candidates, and county parties

  • Raise funds through personal call time and assisting with call time management

  • Work with the Executive Director to ensure cash flow and budget projections are met

  • Work with the Chair, Executive Director, and compliance consultant to track income, expenses, and adjust goals, as needed

  • Working with and cultivating relationships with large donors

  • Planning, scheduling, and managing small-and large-scale fundraising events ranging from small social gatherings to large events with 500+ attendees

  • Recruiting, training, and supervising entry- and mid-level finance staff to assist with and strategy on data entry, call time, donor research, events, and other finance-related tasks

  • Other duties as assigned


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of state party finance laws and regulations

  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license

  • Ability to travel by airplane

  • Fluency in VAN, Google Suite; other field tools a plus

  • Experience with state party and/or coordinated campaign fundraising

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in campaign, advocacy, non-profit finance

  • Experience in mid to senior-level campaign fundraising role

  • Experience managing staff

  • Fundraising event planning and management experience

  • Detailed knowledge of NGP and ActBlue

  • Detailed knowledge of campaign finance laws and regulations

  • Proven track record of raising funds from diverse sources, including prospecting new donors through research, digital fundraising, mail, and cold calls

  • Ability to identify and cultivate new and existing relationships with donors, prospective donors, partner organizations, candidates, elected, and key stakeholders

  • Track record of fundraising planning and implementation, targeting contributors, and follow-through with pledges and donors

  • Comfortable with technology and learning new tech systems

  • Solutions-oriented, creative, and flexible – every day will look different, and it’s important to have a positive attitude, be a team player, and find creative solutions

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to communicate clearly and proactively both with staff and with external partners

  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently and navigate competing priorities

  • Possess a sharp and critical eye for detail

  • Resilient, resourceful, and adaptive to priority shifts and change (big and small)

  • Have experience working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects at the same time while meeting tight deadlines

  • Highly communicative – responsive to internal and external requests, emails, and calls, within reason

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time position. This position salary range is $60,000-$78,000 + Bonus Options. Benefits include medical and dental insurance coverage as well as vacation and plus additional leave time.
