A Better Deal

It used to be a given in America that if you worked hard, kept your head down and played by the rules, you could get ahead and achieve the American Dream. For too many Tennesseans, that is no longer the case. There is a real understanding among most Tennesseans that the economic and political systems are rigged against them.

Today’s working men and women recognize they have a more difficult road than previous generations. The cost of housing, education and basic necessities have gone up much faster than their incomes. People are working as hard as they can and it never seems to be enough. They see a country where success is determined by the status of your parents and your zip code rather than your potential.

In Tennessee, Republican policies have created a system that only works for the people at the top. The wealthiest spend unlimited amounts of money on elections and lobbying lawmakers to maintain their special deals while working families are locked out and left behind. Any policy that is aimed at increasing wages or dignity in the workplace is dead on arrival, but outsourcing and corporate giveaways sail through the state legislature.

Democrats offer a better deal.

Level The Playing Field

Tennessee Democrats will level the playing field by increasing people’s wages, lowering everyday expenses and providing people with the tools to be successful in the 21st century economy.

It has been over 10 years since the federal minimum wage was increased. In Tennessee, Republicans not only abolished minimum wage, they also banned local governments from setting their own wage level. Tennesseans who works full time jobs should not have to rely on public assistance to survive, and nobody can survive on $7.25. Democrats support raising minimum wage over time to $15 per hour. Additionally, cities with higher cost of living should be allowed to set a minimum wage that suits their community.

In most of the industrialized world, people are not forced to choose between their jobs and their families in times of emergency as we allow in America. Companies should provide paid sick and family leave because we all agree that family should always come first.

Modern medicine is truly a miracle, but for too many Tennesseans, the cost of this miracle can bankrupt their family. Our current laws allow giant corporations to gouge patients and make huge profits. Companies can both make money, create jobs and provide the vital medicine that saves lives. Democrats will fight to make rules to ensure that happens.

Other monopolies are driving up monthly expenses for Tennesseans. Access to the internet is no longer a luxury, it is a necessity. Cable companies know they have the market cornered and are raising prices accordingly. Additionally, they are not providing rural communities with access to high speed broadband. The same situation is happening with food prices, airline tickets and other health care expenses. Democrats will enact stronger antitrust laws that will allow regulators to break up companies and ensure there is competition in the marketplace to bring  prices down.

Finally, Democrats know that Social Security and Medicare are not entitlements. They are the legacy of the Great Society that ensures every American can retire with dignity after paying their share for their entire working lives. Over 1.5 million Tennesseans rely on Social Security and Medicare and Democrats will fight to ensure their are not only no cuts in benefits, but that cost of living increase actually meet today’s true cost of living.

We Are All Tennesseans

Every Tennessean deserves a shot at the American Dream no matter what they look like, who they love or where they were born. For too long, Republicans have attempted to divide us and enacted policies that make it harder for people to simply live their own lives. Democrats will not stand for that any longer. Democrats know that an attack on one is an attack on all.

Democrats will put forward policies to ensure that every Tennessean can pursue happiness without fear of persecution.
