Name: Joda Thongnopnua
Running for: Tennessee House District 30 (Greater Chattanooga Area)
Joda grew up in East Tennessee, the son of immigrant parents. Watching his parents work their way into the middle class, he believed that people could achieve the American Dream if they worked hard and played by the rules. Unfortunately, this dream is becoming less and less of a possibility for many Tennesseans — and Joda wants to change that.
Envisioning a Brighter Future:
Joda believes that in order to obtain high quality education for all students, we must invest in teachers and public schools. This means paying teachers a higher salary in addition to ensuring that all classrooms are adequately equipped. He also advocates for raising the minimum wage and expanding Medicaid, both of which would bring economic benefits to the residents of House District 30.
Keeping it local:
The first thing Joda plans to do upon election is to put an end to predatory lending. This is especially prominent in his district, and must end in order to better the lives of his constituents. He hopes to pass legislation that will limit what lenders can charge.
Joda is part of TN Rising, TNDP’s candidate support and Get-Out-the-Vote program. TN Rising helps train legislative candidates from Mountain City to Memphis to run effective campaigns.
