April 15, 2019 (NASHVILLE, Tenn.) — Tennessee Democratic Party Chair Mary Mancini issued the following statement following the Tennessee House’s passage of HB 1079, which would make Tennessee the first state in the nation to impose criminal penalties on voter registration groups for submitting incomplete voter registration forms:

“This bill is voter suppression — plain and simple. It is incomprehensible that a state that sits near the very bottom in voter turnout would take such a drastic measure to cripple and intimidate groups like The Equity Alliance, whose work directly strengthens our Democracy by helping other citizens register to vote. How do Republicans expect grassroots organization to survive after being subjected to $10,000 fines for minor deficiencies such as failing to mark the Mr./Mrs./Ms box in registration forms? The answer is they don’t.

“While Republicans have long worked to make it more difficult to vote, this legislation is an unprecedented attack on voting rights, and Tennessee Democrats will work with voter registration groups and all who value democracy to fight it every step of the way.”
