September 23rd, 2020 (Nashville, TN) – TNDP BLACK CAUCUS CHAIR CIVIL MILLER WATKINS ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE KENTUCKY JUSTICE DEPARTMENT’S DECISION TO NOT CONVICT BREONNA TAYLOR’S MURDERERS.
“Today, the Kentucky Department of Justice announced its position on the murder of the Breonna Taylor. As has been true in the aftermath of so many of these police killings, the officers involved will not be held accountable. The Kentucky Attorney General failed to find the officers’ midnight shooting a homicide; in fact, he called their actions “justified”.
This state-sanctioned violence against Black Americans will continue if police are not held to the same standard as everyone else. Until then, there will be more Breonna Taylors, more George Floyds, and more Mike Browns.
Though justice was not had today, we must not hang our heads in defeat. We live in a democracy. And the public officials who failed Breonna Taylor—we elect them. Attorneys general and mayors and prosecutors throughout America are elected. We must use this moment to mobilize, to ensure that our representatives hear our cries for truth and justice.
Vote. Protest peacefully. Make your voice heard. Say her name. “ -Civil Miller Watkins, Chair, Tennessee Democratic Party Black Caucus
