TNDP CHAIR MARY MANCINI RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO SECRETARY OF STATE TRE HARGETT’S TESTIMONY IN FRONT OF THE U.S. SENATE
July 22nd, 2020 (Nashville, TN) – Today, Republican Secretary of State Tre Hargett testified in front of a U.S. Senate committee regarding Tennessee’s preparations for our elections. During his testimony he lied to one Senator about the reason we couldn’t expand absentee voting and was called “pitiful” by another. In response, Tennessee Democratic Party chair Mary Mancini released the following statement:
“Tennessee Republicans can’t be trusted to do the right thing for the people of the state anymore. Their lack of leadership was on full display today when Secretary of State Tre Hargett refused to take responsibility for allowing the COVID 19 pandemic to create chaos with our elections.
Senate committee members were mortified by Secretary Hargett’s testimony and his belief that the fear of contracting the virus is not a valid excuse to request an absentee ballot. It is, as one senator said, “pitiful,” that he would make the people of Tennessee choose between their health and voting.
As the officer of the state whose job it is to safeguard our elections, we are mortified by his representation of Tennessee on the national stage, his lack of leadership, and his attempt to shift blame. Tre Hargett had to be sued to do the right thing and allow absentee voting for those concerned about getting sick or infecting their families. He is also one-hundred percent responsible for the ongoing appeal of that decision. He will also be one hundred percent responsible if the appeal is successful and we go back to being only a handful of states who will not expand absentee voting during this deadly health crisis.”- Mary Mancini, TNDP Chair
