August 25th, 2020 (Nashville, TN) – TNDP CHAIR MARY MANCINI ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION NIGHT TWO
“Trump inherited a strong economy from the Obama-Biden administration, and just like everything he’s inherited, Trump squandered it. Trump’s chaotic presidency, his mismanagement of the coronavirus crisis, and his failed leadership has plunged our country into an economic crisis. The statistics are staggering: 16 million Americans are unemployed with a near double-digit jobless rate in Tennessee. More than 30% of Tennessee families either couldn’t pay their rent last month or aren’t confident they will make it next month. And since Trump took office, Tennessee farm bankruptcies have swelled 29%.
We won’t hear about these realities tonight nor will we hear the GOP empathize with the small businesses, the renters, and the farmers buckling under the weight of a historic economic collapse. We won’t hear the president lay out a plan to get Americans back to work. We won’t hear how Republicans put unemployment payments for those hard hit by COVID-19 on the chopping block. We won’t hear concern for the uncertainty and despair that is overwhelming our fellow Americans. Instead, we’ll hear cliched cultural grievances and unhinged racist attacks from President Trump’s and his cronies, whose only concern is his re-election.
Americans deserve better. This November, we must vote out Republicans across the state and in DC and elect candidates who care about all Tennesseans and who will put this country back on a steady course.” – Mary Mancini, Chair, Tennessee Democratic Party
