TNDP Statement on Rep. Casada’s Election as House Speaker

//TNDP Statement on Rep. Casada’s Election as House Speaker

November 20, 2018 (NASHVILLE, Tenn.) — Following Rep. Glen Casada’s election as the Speaker of the House for Tennessee’s 111th General Assembly, Tennessee Democratic Party Chair Mary Mancini released the following statement:

“Rep. Glen Casada’s election as House Speaker for Tennessee’s next General Assembly show us exactly who the Republican Party is in Tennessee. They just elected a man to the most powerful position in the state house who said he would ‘protect Republican incumbents even when it might not be popular…,’ following a news story in which incumbent Republican legislator David Byrd admitted to sexually harassing three high school girls. They just elected a man who has shut down Medicaid expansion in secret, closed-door meetings. They just elected a man who tried to stop the city of Memphis from removing Confederate statues — and who already has plans to stop the city of Nashville from implementing a community oversight board approved by the voters.

“We wish Speaker Casada the best of luck in his role and implore him to do what’s best and put the people of Tennessee ahead of his political Party and his own ambitions. But we’re not holding our breath.”
