July 12, 2019 (NASHVILLE, Tenn.) — Lights for Liberty Vigils are taking place throughout Tennessee this evening as part of a national day of action to call for an end to the inhumane conditions in detention centers at our southern border. Tennessee Democratic Party Chair Mary Mancini released the following statement:
“I’m proud to stand with thousands of other Tennesseans at the Lights for Liberty vigils across the state and call for an end to the squalid and cruel conditions at the border. Children shouldn’t be dying and babies shouldn’t be ripped from the arms of their mothers and fathers and locked in overcrowded, cement-floored cages without hot showers or meals. The Trump administration policies fostering these inhumane conditions violate our most basic values and are reasons for every American to be outraged.
“We’re gathering tonight to to demand an immediate end to these detention camps and for a more humane process for immigrants, migrants, and asylum-seekers that aligns with our American values.”
