NASHVILLE — Today marks five years since the January 6th insurrection, when a violent mob stormed the United States Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election and stop Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential results. More than 140 law enforcement officers were injured as they bravely defended the Capitol, Members of Congress, and their staff.
In the years since, Donald Trump and Tennessee Republicans have continued to refuse to denounce political violence, promote dangerous conspiracy theories, and rewrite history by calling January 6th a “day of love” and praising those who carried out the attack. On his first day back in office, Trump pardoned nearly 1,600 individuals, including several Tennesseans, involved in the insurrection even as reports show that dozens of those pardoned went on to commit additional violent crimes.
“Five years ago today, a violent mob attacked the United States Capitol. It was an attempt to prevent the peaceful transfer of power after Donald Trump lied about the 2020 election results. Despite their attempts to overturn the democratic will of the American people, the January 6th insurrection failed because of the remarkable heroism and bravery of Capitol Police and the public servants who certified the election despite Trump’s attempts to stop it.
While Donald Trump and his Republican allies here at home and across the country continue to lie about the 2020 election and what happened on January 6th, Tennessee Democrats will continue to stand up for truth, accountability, justice, and our sacred right to vote. Our democracy is worth fighting for. Tennessee is worth fighting for. And we will never stop defending it,” said Rachel Campbell, Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party.
