NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Democratic Party is condemning the coordinated anti-immigrant agenda at both the state and national level that is rooted in hate, driven by cruelty, and making Tennessee families less safe. In Tennessee, recent Republican legislation is requiring the state to collect and share the immigration status of children enrolled in the Children’s Special Services program, putting kids and their families at risk when they seek lifesaving medical care. 

At the same time, the U.S. Supreme Court is weighing a case that could undermine birthright citizenship and has just made a decision in the case of Mullin v. Al Otro Lado, which upholds the Trump administration’s practice of intercepting asylum seekers within Mexico and turning them away without a fair chance at having their case heard.

“Every Tennessean deserves to be safe, to get the care they need, and to live free from fear that their family will be targeted for political gain. From the White House to our State House, Republicans are fueling fear and division to distract from their failure to address the issues that every Tennessee family is facing: skyrocketing health care costs, unaffordable housing and childcare, and higher prices at the grocery store and the gas pump. Instead of doing anything to make life more affordable or help working families get ahead, Republicans in Tennessee and across the country have chosen hate and cruelty. They are putting innocent and vulnerable children at risk, tearing families apart, and using fear as a weapon to hold onto power. Tennessee Democrats will not stay silent while Republicans threaten the safety and dignity of our communities. We will keep organizing in every corner of this state, we will keep showing up alongside the families and communities they are trying to target, and we will hold them accountable at the ballot box.”
