Dealing a major defeat to Trump, the Court upheld a cornerstone of American democracy
NASHVILLE – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the 14th Amendment. In Trump v. Barbara, the Court officially struck down Donald Trump’s executive order that sought to strip birthright citizenship from children born in the United States to parents who lack permanent immigration status.
The following is a statement from Rachel Campbell, Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party:
“Today, the Court upheld a cornerstone of American democracy: the promise that anyone born on American soil is an American citizen.
“We celebrate today’s ruling as a victory for the Constitution and for every family whose future was put at risk by this administration’s attempt to redefine American citizenship. Instead of doing anything to make life better or more affordable, Republicans from the White House to our State House continue to use racism, cruelty, and fear as weapons to hold onto power.
“While this is a massive victory for our country, we know the fight is far from over and we will hold them accountable at the ballot box. We remain committed to defending the rights and dignity of all Tennesseans, regardless of who they are, where they are from, or how much money they make.”
