Ruling threatens fair representation, undermines civil rights progress, and comes as Tennesseans need leaders focused on lowering costs and protecting democracy

NASHVILLE — Today, in its decision in Louisiana v. Callais, the United States Supreme Court severely weakened one of the core protections of the Voting Rights Act designed to safeguard minority representation. By overturning decades of legal precedent, the Court has undermined a foundational victory of the Civil Rights Movement and opened the door for the dilution of Black, Latino, AANHPI, and Native American voting power across the country, especially in Tennessee where Tennessee Republicans have consistently sought to weaken the political influence of marginalized communities, all while Tennesseans continue to face rising costs and economic challenges that require leaders focused on delivering real solutions.

Statement from Rachel Campbell, Chairwoman of the Tennessee Democratic Party:
“Republicans know they cannot win a free and fair election in November and so they are desperate to rig it. Tennesseans deserve free, fair elections where every voice is heard. Full stop. While this decision is a devastating setback for civil rights and fair representation, the Tennessee Democratic Party will continue fighting to protect the fundamental right to vote for every Tennessean.”
